Community Involvement

The Halifax Port Authority is proud to be an active member of the community in which we live and work. We donate our time, expertise and financial resources to a wide range of charities, cultural groups, and skills-development organizations. We are also actively involved in safety and environmental initiatives, educational programs and marine and landside security planning, which benefits commercial shipping and the local community alike.

Over time, we have surveyed HPA employees and stakeholders about what causes we should be supporting with our Community Investment Program. Through this process, three areas were selected for our primary focus: arts & culture, the environment and port-related activities.

Arts & Culture

The Environment

• The Port of Halifax was the first Canadian port to achieve ISO 14001 certification.
• Clean Nova Scotia and HPA teamed up in 2011 to host Beach Sweeps, gathering volunteers and targeting a number of beaches for clean-up before the summer beach season began. HPA also supports the Ship to Shore program, which won the 2012 RRFB Nova Scotia Mobius Award for Environmental Excellence in the category of Waste Reduction Education. Also, in 2012, we sponsored the RainYards Program.
